Intacs & Keratoconus
Keratoconus Surgical Management with Intacs
We frequently see individuals in our office that are inquiring about Lasik procedures, but who are found to have the problem of keratoconus. These patients have generally had a lifetime of frustration trying to manage with ill fitting contact lenses and are relieved to find out that there are some surgical options to improve vision and relieve this frustration.
Intacts, (intracorneal rung segments) act as microscopic plastic rings that are implanted in the cornea. They add to the structural integrity of the congenitally weakened cornea, and often lead to improvement in vision.
In addition, keratoconus is often associated with high amounts of myopia. To releive this myopia, we now have the option of utilizing phakic implants(ICL’s) which are surgically implanted. This option, for the keratoconus patient, is significantly safer than any laser options for these specific circumstances.
