Better Understand Eyelash Mites with Dr. Joel J. Ackerman

Being an eye doctor that has operated in the valley since 1983, I know that what you don’t see can be hurting you! If you’ve never heard of eyelash mites you’re not alone, millions of people have them and don’t even know it! Eyelash mites, also known as Demodex Mites, are microscopic parasites that live along the lid base of your eyelashes. They are passed from person to person and they feed on the mucus and oils that people tend to secrete from pores. These mites especially like face follicles where they lay their eggs.

Yes….mites live in our eyelashes, and I see this in my office virtually every day. What are the chances of you getting them? Unfortunately, too good! Most people have no clue; they don’t have any symptoms until they start to get red, irritated, dry eyes with burning sensation and vision that changes with every blink of an eye. These mites do not like light so they’re more active at night when you are sleeping, at which time they feed, crawl and reproduce.

Sounds gross, right?! The good news….you can get rid of them with a treatment called BlephEx. A treatment that’s quick and easy and done in the office in 20 minutes. It’s almost like an electric toothbrush that exfoliates the lids and lashes, which is very effective in removing the mites and their eggs. I would also recommend to my patients using tea tree oil shampoos or soaps, by applying it as instructed to the lashes at night before bed, there are other treatments such as prescription eye drops and cleansing foams. All these remedies can be reviewed at your next appointment!
