Cataracts refer to the cloudiness that can occur on the lens of the eye. Cataracts are most commonly found in older adults. This is the leading cause of loss of vision among people over forty years old. Cataracts are characterized by a progressive impact on your vision. It may begin as a blurring, intensity of light and sun, and dullness in colors. It may appear as though you are looking through a piece of cloudy glass. Symptoms will continue to worsen if left untreated.
There are three types of cataracts that people can develop.

Early cataracts are typically treated with glasses, bifocals, or other visual aids. These treatments are non-invasive and can improve your vision. However, if your cataracts are more severe or have a significant impact on your vision, cataract surgery may be required to improve your vision. In this procedure, the surgeon will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens, which eliminates the cloudiness. These artificial intraocular lenses, or IOLs, traditionally have a single-focus that allows you to see clearly at one distance; however, modern multifocal lenses allow patients to see clearly at all distances, reducing or even eliminating their use of corrective eyewear. In addition, Walman Eye Center also has the option of utilizing Toric lenses which can eliminate astigmatism and strengthen your vision for distance without having to depend on glasses that correct for astigmatism. With successful surgery, all of the cloudiness will be removed and you will have clear vision again.
The surgery is still considered minimally invasive and can be performed at Walman Eye Center. Those who have cataracts in both eyes cannot have both eye procedures done at once. Usually, the laser cataract surgery is performed weeks apart to ensure eye health and safety.
After cataract surgery, which usually takes 10 minutes or less, it is important to allow the appropriate recovery time to ensure the health and safety of your eye and vision. Immediately after surgery, you will wear an eye shield to protect your eye and aid in the healing process. You may be able to remove the shield several hours after surgery. When the shield is first removed, your vision may be blurry or distorted but this is normal. Your eye will need to adjust to the new artificial lens that has been placed in your eye to replace the blurred lens. Most people find their vision to be clear after several hours or the days following the surgery. Colors will also seem brighter with the new lens.
Follow-up appointments are required 1-2 days after surgery, one week after surgery, and one month after surgery to monitor the healing process. Some discomfort may occur over the first few days following surgery but it is important to avoid rubbing or itching your eye. Eye drops will be prescribed to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Within the first week of your surgery, discomfort and irritation should dissipate and vision will be much clearer.
